The Joyy of Breaking With Society’s Expectations

How I broke the rules in Turkey and move to California!

It sounds crazy to leave your whole life and start over in another country, facing all of the challenges…

Let’s start at the beginning of my story:

It was 4 years ago, when I felt lost. I wasn’t happy and couldn’t enjoy my life even though I had a great job, and lived with my wonderful family… Something was missing in my life, I wasn’t satisfied and felt I needed  purpose. Although, I didn’t know what it was at that time, what I did know was that I believed there was more to this life right in front of me.

I knew I didn’t fully agree with my societies rules, And I was so tired of doing the things that didn’t bring me Joyy. One day I said to myself “enough is enough, I need to do something.”

I didn’t know what to do and who to talk to. I just had a feeling that I wanted to go to the United States. I could never fully explain the feeling from that day but it was something deep in my soul and I felt so strongly about what I was meant to do. I felt a calling that I had to go to the United States. So, I did.

Was it easy to do or even convenient to my family? No, not at all!

It was hard because we have the expectation that when a  person graduates from university, they are to get a job. People thought of me like this – She now has this job, she is now expected to find a boyfriend. When the boyfriend comes along, then the heavys question comes. Will it be a serious relationship or not?

And if it’s serious Turkish society waits for you to get married. After marriage they expect you to have a child… this will goes on and on…

I have always hated to tell people what I am going to do with my life as well as trying to fulfill their expectations!

I was at that point when I was a Human Resources Specialist in a big company, people started asking me about my relationship status and I didn’t want anyone at the time. I was faced with that kind of expectation as well as the never ending questions of how my life would turn out.

I had to answer to the never ending question about my life where I was not satisfied with my job either! I was STUCK! So, that was my turning point to go deeper into what I want and how I could make it happen.

Convincing Others To Let You Go For Your Dream

I did a lot of internal and external researching where I took my dreams from the shelf and turned into reality. I took several self-improvement trainings including NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and became a Professional Life Coach.

I found my calling which was to change people’s lives as I was on a process of changing my own and learning a lot about what it takes to challenge that change.

During the NLP Training I decided to quit my job and move to California to become a Motivational Speaker. This is when the hard time of convincing my dad began. I am saying my dad because my mom was more supportive and mostly open to new challenges than my dad was for me.

And my dad was more traditional in a way, wanting for me to have a decent job rather than having challenges in my life because of his experiences. So, what I remember from those times was, we were having dinner every night together.

Meanwhile I was trying to convince my dad about me quitting my job and moving to California. He would tell me all the negative stories about what might happen in the future.

Then, at the end of the night, he would win and I was knocked down again and again…until I found his weakness. Loving his daughter more than anything else, and the last thing he would want was in life to see her unhappy.

I used that and told him to please let me go. I said to him I don’t want to regret this calling or to end up unhappy about what my life could have been.

I just want to try and follow my dreams and see what happens. After a while, he accepted and I quit my job! That was the most FREEING moment that I’d had ever felt in my life!

Going to California!

I quit my job in March, 2016 and I found a way to come to the United  States as a student in June, 2016. However, I didn’t know anyone in the U.S. and I didn’t know English, nor did I have a job. But I knew something bigger was going to happen and I needed to be in the United States to find it.

Long story short, I had the most amazing experiences in my life for the past 3 years that I’ve made the decision and changed my life over and over again by learning and growing with each new experience.

I attended several trainings and seminars including Tony Robbins, Brendon Burchard, Kyle Cease… learned Transcendental Meditation, including working with a lot of entrepreneurs, life coaches, fitness coaches, authors, speakers and more..

Studied 2 post graduate programs at the University of California in Media & Global Communications and Digital Marketing.
